How long a salon machine takes to pay for itself depends on three numbers: what it cost, what you charge per treatment, and how many treatments you actually book each week. There’s no fixed answer — a well-booked machine pays back far faster than an idle one — but you can work out a realistic estimate for your own salon in a few minutes. Results vary.
I’m Katie Godfrey — I coach Contour’s salon owners through exactly this question. “When does it pay for itself?” is the right thing to ask before a five-figure buy, and the good news is it’s arithmetic, not a guess. Here’s the honest method, and a calculator to run your own figures.
What decides how fast a machine pays back?

Payback is just the point where the money the machine has earned covers what it cost. Four things move that date:
- The total cost — the machine plus warranty, servicing and consumables (and, if you finance, the full cost of the finance, not just the monthly payment).
- Your price per treatment — usually sold as a course, so your course price does the heavy lifting.
- Utilisation — how many treatments you book per week. This is the biggest lever by far.
- Your running costs — consumables, room and staff time that come off each treatment.
Two salons can buy the identical machine and pay it back months apart, purely on how full their diaries are. That’s why no honest supplier can promise you a payback date — but you can estimate yours.
How do I work out payback for my salon?

The method is simple:
Monthly contribution = (treatments per month × price per treatment) − monthly running costs
Payback (months) = total cost ÷ monthly contribution
Drop in your own realistic figures — conservative on bookings, honest on price — and you’ve got an estimate grounded in your salon, not a brochure.
An illustrative example (illustrative, not a projection)
To show how the maths works — not to predict your result — here’s the shape of the calculation with placeholder assumptions:
- Treatments per week:
- Price per treatment/course:
- Monthly running costs:
- Total machine cost:
Put those into the two formulas above and you get an indicative payback period. This is an illustration of the method, not a projection or a guaranteed timeframe — change any one input and the answer changes. Your real inputs are the only ones that matter.
Run your own numbers: the ROI calculator

Rather than borrow anyone else’s assumptions, use ours to model yours. Our free treatment ROI and payback calculator lets you enter your own price, bookings and costs and see an indicative payback period and monthly contribution for your salon.
It’s an estimate based on the figures you put in — not a guarantee, forecast or promise of profit — and it’s yours to keep and adjust as your diary grows. It’s the same tool I use with owners in coaching sessions.
Does finance change the payback maths?

It changes the shape, not the honesty of it. Spreading the cost with finance means the machine can start earning while you’re still paying — so instead of a big upfront outlay to recover, you’re comparing the monthly finance payment against the monthly contribution the machine brings in. If the line is well-booked, it can be contributing from early on.
Do include the full cost of the finance in your sums, not just the headline monthly figure. Finance is subject to status and affordability.
What does payback look like in practice?

The formulas tell you the method; a real salon tells you what it looked like in the real world. For a named owner’s actual, dated figures — what they charged, how they filled the diary, and how the machine paid back — see our case studies. Results vary from salon to salon.
Work it out with someone who’s done it

The maths is straightforward; getting the bookings that drive it is the real work — which is the part I coach owners through. Every Contour machine comes as the complete package:
- The machine — the right device for your client base.
- Free accredited qualification — VTCT training, delivered by SKIN13.
- Free manufacturer training — for up to five members of staff.
- 1:1 business coaching — with me (KG), to price the line and fill the diary that drives your payback.
- FCA-regulated finance — to spread the cost (subject to status).
- After-sale support — from a team that’s run salons themselves.
Run your figures in the ROI and payback calculator, take a look at the laser hair removal machines for salons, or book a demo — and if the payback maths doesn’t work for your salon yet, we’ll tell you.
